How to socialise your dog?

Публикувано на 05/07/2024
Education/Training

You can find a dog school in almost every city or contact pet sitting/pet services companies for support to find suitable trainers for dogs (behaviourist). These pet behaviour schools provide an opportunity for socialisation with other dogs and people as well as preparing the dog for staying with foreign person (pet sitter) when needed. As with children, dogs attend school at the appropriate age to be taught basic commands. This is important for good and safe behaviour and socialisation so that they acquire the ability to live peacefully with their surroundings. Young dogs have more opportunity to adapt and learn similarly to children.

Training in these pet schools includes preparation for various situations, such as meeting other animals, people, dog walks on occasion or dog walks with multiple dogs, having a pet sitter or staying in the pet sitter’s home, etc. Pet schools are important, but just as important is your diligence. Offer your pet a different environment when walking, teach them to recognize different sounds, smells and objects. This will build a pet's confidence and contribute towards good behaviour.

Allow your dog to interact with a variety of people, both at home and outside. Do not lock your dog in a separate room when you have guests and do not pull them when they want to sniff a person or another animal, unless the circumstances require it. Typically if you let your pet stay with a pet sitter, the sitter would be adapting and using the already gathered knowledge around your pet and behaviour. Be aware of your pet's individual needs and boundaries. Not everyone reacts in the same way and it is important to consider their individuality.

Dogs' adaptability increases when they have predictability and security. Once they feel safe in the company of their pet owner or pet sitter, then it becomes much easier to navigate around. Establish a routine in their daily routine such as meal time, dog walk time and its duration. Routine makes the dog calm and he can meet any challenge with greater tolerance.

Socialization plays an important role in the formation of balanced and sustainable behaviour.
