The Yorkshire Terrier, Smokey

Published on 17/09/2025
Interesting facts about small dog breeds

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small breed of dog with a courageous character. They have a beautiful coat and are suitable as pets.

Smokey is a female Yorkie found by an American soldier in the jungle of New Guinea in February 1944. The dog was later purchased by American Corporal William A. Winn. Smokey accompanied Corporal Winn on military missions and saved many soldiers from death. His main role was to warn of approaching enemies and other dangers long before the soldiers heard anything.

Smokey was not a dog that was officially recognized as part of the army and Corporal Winn had to take away from his food allowance to feed Smokey.

Smokey was a cheerful dog and is probably the first therapy dog. He accompanied nurses on hospital rounds in New Guinea. She lifted the spirits of wounded and dying soldiers. After World War II, she continued to work as a therapy dog.

One of Smokey's most recognized achievements is running a telegraph wire through a very narrow pipe. Corporal Winn tied the wire to Smokey's collar and she ran it through the pipe to the other side. This happened in a few minutes, while it would have taken 100 soldiers and several days for humans to complete this task, which was also dangerous. The wire was needed to build a military airfield.

Smokey also jumped with a parachute. Because of Smokey's achievements and help, she has several memorials erected in her honor, both in the United States and elsewhere. She has received military awards along with Corporal Winn and has proven that even in a small body (1.8 kg.) a big and brave heart can beat.
