Can we raise and train a cat?

Published on 17/09/2025
Cats

Raising and training a cat is just as important as raising and training a dog. The public opinion is that cats cannot be raised, but this is not at all the case.

It is essential for cats to have a safe and comfortable, as well as a clean environment. Cats are curious and need a separate space. This does not have to be a separate room, it can be a corner of your home, a closet or any other suitable space that the cat will perceive as its home. At first, she will prefer to "hide" there, give her time to trust you to start seeking your attention.

Cats like to eat in a clean environment, so her toilet should not be near her food. The situation with water is even more complicated. Cats do not drink much water and rarely think to do so, they do not seem to feel thirsty, although two-thirds of their body is made up of water. In the wild, they get their water from their food, but in a home environment, this can be a problem and your cat could become dehydrated. Place water bowls in several places in the house where not many people pass by. Some cats like cold water, put ice in the bowl. Do not place the water bowl near their food and toilet. If they are turning the water over, they may not like the container you are pouring water into. Change it. In any case, try to always have fresh water available to stay hydrated and avoid health problems.

Although cats are not trained exactly like dogs, many of them can learn basic commands. Encourage them just like dogs, with treats, praise and rewards. Socializing your cat is very important to avoid aggressive behavior towards people and other animals in the future.

Provide your cat with a special object to sharpen its claws on, and every time it does it in a different place, direct it to it. The same goes for toys, they should be appropriate and stimulating to her mind and to use up her energy. When she starts playing with an inappropriate object from your home, direct her to her “home” and her toys.

Living with a cat can be a lot of fun and enjoyable if you set your boundaries and rules. By giving your cat her own space, she will thank you in a way that only she can.
